The Ph.D. in Clinical and Translational Research; Option in Clinical Research program focuses on applying advanced concepts in clinical epidemiology to design, develop and implement clinically relevant research and novel research methods including trials of complex interventions, application of artificial intelligence to health care, advanced statistical modeling and the measurement of person-centered outcomes. The thesis must focus on clinical research.
Applicants for the PhD concentration in Clinical Research must hold either a MSc degree with epidemiology/ biostatistical/ methodology/health services and research at the masters level, or an M.D./health professional masters degree, or its equivalent. The Graduate Program requires a cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) of not less than 3.4 out of a possible maximum of 4.0 to be admitted to the PhD program.
*Please note that the PhD in Clinical and Translational Research, Clinical Research Option accepts applications for Fall admission only.*
Program Requirements
A PhD Degree in Division of Clinical and Translational Research, Clinical Research Option, requires the student to:
- Complete course requirements (see below)
- Hold annual thesis committee meetings
- Successfully complete the oral comprehensive exam
- Submit a thesis based on their research that is passed by an internal and external examiner
Time Requirement
- The PhD Program at McGill University requires a minimum residence of four full-time terms if admitted at the PhD 2 level, and 6 full-time terms if admitted at the PhD 1 level.
- PhD students are required to pay a minimum of 6 full-time terms (if admitted as PhD 2) and 8 full-time terms (if admitted to PhD 1). If degree requirements are met prior to completion of the residency year (PhD 3), fees for outstanding residency terms will be charged in the final term of registration.

Thesis Requirements
- A thesis for the doctoral degree must constitute original scholarship and must be a distinct contribution to knowledge. It must show familiarity with previous work in the field and must demonstrate ability to plan and carry out research, organize results, and defend the approach and conclusions in a scholarly manner. The research presented must meet current standards of the discipline; as well, the thesis must clearly demonstrate how the research advances knowledge in the field. Finally, the thesis must be written in compliance with norms for academic and scholarly expression and for publication in the public domain.
- The PhD Thesis should follow the guidelines and requirements outlined on the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website.
