Stipend Policy

Full-time MSc-Thesis and PhD graduate students in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences will receive funding to support their living expenses, tuition and fees. Students must be financially supported by either a) their supervisor, b) through studentships or fellowships, or c) a foreign government body who awards a scholarship to study abroad. The Division does not accept self-funded students.

*Exception: MSc DHI students do not receive a stipend in their first year of studies. Stipends for DHI students will begin May 1st of their first year of studies.

The Division of Experimental Medicine follows the Stipend Policy set by the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, which can be found on their website.

The minimum annual stipends for the 2024-2025 academic year take effect on September 1, 2024 and are as follows:

*Tuition/Fees/Insurance are estimated based on an anticipated 3% increase over Annual fees for 2023-2024 Fall/Winter, which is reflected in the tuition fee tables at this time. It's subject to be adjusted after review of the Spring referendum period results.*

Top-up policy (Supplemental funding):

In recognition of students who receive internal or external scholarship awards, the supervisor will provide a top-up payment of 10% of the value of the scholarship on top of the minimum stipend.

Stipend and Tuition Support from the Division:

Starting in Fall 2024, the Division will provide Canadian PhD students $12,000 towards their stipend in year 1, decreasing the financial burden of their supervisors at the start of their doctoral studies. The stipend support will be disbursed in monthly payments directly to the student’s bank account.

In an effort to assist and alleviate the burden of the high International Tuition Fees, the Division of Experimental Medicine offers a Tuition Support to eligible International PhD students, Out-of-Province MSc students and a limited number of international MSc students. Tuition support is for programs in which students receive a stipend from their supervisor, and is only given in the first 3 terms of the MSc, and up until end of PhD4.

The tuition supplement from the Division will be deposited directly into the student's fee account - half at the start of fall term, and half at the start of winter term. The remainder of the student's tuition will be covered by the supervisor and will be included in the student’s regular stipend payments.

Further information on the Tuition Fee Supplement can be found here (https://www.mcgill.ca/expmed/funding-and-awards/internal-awards)
