McGill Engine Capstone Design Prizes for Entrepreneurship

Applications for 2023 are closed. See 2023 winners here.

The McGill Engine Capstone Design Prizes for Entrepreneurship support Faculty of Engineering student teams that have developed an innovative design solution as part of their final year Capstone Design Project with potential for their own startup venture.

How It Works

  1. Eligible teams apply.
  2. Engine team selects the top 6 applications submitted as part of this annual competition.
  3. Engine team judges the top 6 finalist teams during their presentations taking place during Design Day.
  4. Top 3 teams win cash prizes of $300, $200 and $100, each prize to be divided equally among the winning team members.

Eligibility for student teams to apply:

  • Limited to design capstone teams not working for an industrial client, i.e. potential for their own startup venture (can be not-for-profit) or commercialization (e.g. via licensing).
  • If working with a professor, applicants must confirm that they have permission from the professor involved to proceed with potential future commercialization.

How are submissions and finalists evaluated?

  • Clarity/effectiveness and timely pitch delivery of their problem description and design solution
  • Degree of innovation of their solution: desirable from human and societal perspectives, feasible from the technical perspective, and viable from the economic perspective
  • Competitive advantage of their solution
