From Saturday, Oct. 5 through Monday, Oct. 7, the Downtown and Macdonald Campuses will be open only to McGill students, employees and essential visitors. Many classes will be held online. Remote work required where possible. See Campus Public Safety website for details.

Shannon Hutcheson Interviewed by The Chronicle of Higher Education about International Students and Sexual Violence

Although there is limited research about international students' experiences with sexual violence, available literature suggests that they are more likely to be victims than domestic students. 

Doctoral candidate Shannon Hutcheson was interviewed by The Chronicle of Higher Education to share her expertise on the topic. She said that while it’s important for colleges and law enforcement to understand the impact of international students’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds, officials have to be careful about how those differences frame their own thinking. At times, such differences have been used to invalidate students’ experiences of sexual assault or even to discourage them from reporting. “Authorities will question: ‘Are you sure you just didn’t have a cultural misunderstanding? Oh, I think you just don’t understand'," said Shannon.
