Desautels alumnus to speak at emerging managers roundtable

On May 3rd, Brett Hickey (BCom'02), founder and CEO of middle-market alternative asset manager Star Mountain Capital, is slated to speak at the 20th Annual Milken Institute Global Conference. He will be addressing the Emerging Manager Roundtable, which will deal with best practises, innovation, and scale.

Eytan Bensoussan on mentoring, entrepreneurship and modern business banking

Eytan Bensoussan (BSc’05, MBA/LLB’10) loves a challenge. He has studied math, bio-chemistry, political science and management. In his career life, he worked for McKinsey & Company, the Globe and Mail, and Ferst Capital Partners before co-founding Ferst Digital, which is a modern banking platform for small businesses and start-ups.

At the CAFAs, glitz and glitterati are on parade

In some ways, it’s the party of the year. On April 7th, Canada’s biggest fashion names gathered in Toronto for the fourth Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards. The event was heavy on pizzazz, from the pre-event cocktails to the after-dinner party. The guest list was a who’s who of Canada’s glitterati, from Erdem Moralioglu to David Dixon.

Quebec’s hottest new microbrewery works local angle

New Deal Brewing Co. co-owner Daleyne Guay (EMBA’2016) says that, over the past five years, microbews have risen to 8.9% of the Quebec market, while the majors have lost 1% per year and imports have taken up the space in-between. Within this context, Mr. Guay is on a mission to make you to reach for one of his Boldwin beers before you grab that next Stella Artois. New Deal has positioned itself as the province’s only 100% organic brewery, which also maximises sustainability throughout its production process.

EMBA alumna on leadership, success and working in a male-dominated environment

France-Margaret Bélanger (EMBA’14) grew up in Matane, a world away from her current life as Chief Legal Officer at the Montreal Canadiens. She sat down with Desautels Associate Professor Karl Moore to talk about her journey from small-town Quebec to an English-language Cegep, then on to law school and a great job at a big-ticket law firm. On the way, she earned an MBA as a means of becoming a better business adviser.

Imran Amed honoured with Vanguard Award

“I’m not looking at fashion through a Canadian lens, or even a Western lens, but a global lens,” says Imran Amed (BCom'97). Indeed, he doesn’t even look at it through the eyes of someone who grew up steeped in fashion. Mr. Amed started Business of Fashion as a personal blog while he was working as a management consultant with zero fashion training. Today, his London-based site is the go-to source for news-hungry glitterati.

Future food now: how insects will solve world hunger

In an interview on Fox Business Network, Aspire CEO Mohammed Ashour (MBA'14) makes the case for eating bugs as a way to meet the world’s growing protein requirements. His company, the Aspire Group, runs a cricket farm in Texas and a palm weevil larvae operation in Ghana, both aimed at creating a sustainable insect-based food industry. Mr. Ashour says that both insects are “extremely nutritious, and have a high amount of protein, iron and other micro-nutrients; and utilize an extraordinarily low amount of resources to produce.”

A refreshing take on healthcare

Dr. Anoop Kumar (IMHL’15) has published a new book, Michelanglo’s Medicine: how redefining the human body will transform health and healthcare. The book offers a refreshing look at the human body not just as a bunch of organs, but rather as “a masterpiece, waiting to be discovered.” Dr. Kumar proposes a new approach based on his experiences as an ER doctor, as well as the eastern philosophies he grew up with.

Desautels alumnus named Exec VP at PNG Gold

West Vancouver-based PNG Gold has announced the appointment of Wesley Marstaller (BCom'05) as Executive Vice President of the corporation. Before coming on board at PNG Gold, Mr. Marstaller served in several capacities at the Macquarie Group, then as COO of the Rennie Group. PNG Gold CEO Greg Clarkes praises Mr. Marstaller, saying that his expertise will help with “building the management group necessary to achieve the Company’s near and long term goals.” PNG Gold is a mining company specialized in gold exploration in Papua New Guinea.

Desautels alumnus bets on bugs to solve world hunger

As the world’s population increases, the pressure to find an ecologically-feasible protein source is mounting, so Mohammed Ashour (MBA'14) of the Aspire Food Group is bringing a foreign concept to the US: eating insects. Long a staple protein source in many countries, bugs offer a bigger protein hit, and require fewer resources than traditional livestock does.

The Calgary boy and Desautels alumnus who became a fashion pundit: Imran Amed

Imran Amed is the founder and editor-in-chief of online fashion news hub The Business of Fashion (BoF), which has overtaken the venerable Womens Wear Daily as the industry’s main news source. But it wasn’t a hidden desire to be a designer that made him start blogging about fashion; he was always more interested in the business side of things. Or, as he says, “I was less drawn to what Michael Jackson wore than how his latest album was performing on the Billboard charts.”

How Desautels alumna Monia Mazigh took on the government and won

Monia Mazigh became a household name when her husband, Maher Arar, was detained and held without charge in the US, then deported to Syria in 2002. As Arar suffered in a Syrian cell, Mazigh’s persistent campaign to get him released not only brought Arar home, it also resulted in a Commission of Inquiry, which cleared him of wrongdoing — and it changed Mazigh’s life. She went on to run for the federal NDP in the next election, and has been working in civil liberties and as an author ever since.

Aldo Bensadoun (BCom'64, LLD'12) is stepping down as chairman of the company that bears his name, as is CEO Patrik Frisk — but continuity won’t be a problem: Bensadoun’s son, David, is taking on the CEO job, starting this April.

Profound appoints Desautels alumna to its Board of Directors

In its 2016 financial results press release, Mississauga-based Profound Medical announced the appointment of Samira Sakhia (BCom’90, MBA’01) to its Board of Directors. Ms. Sakhia is also a member of the Desautels International Advisory Board and serves as President of Knight Therapeutics. Prior to that, she was CFO of Paladin Labs, which she helped sell to Dublin-based pharma giant, Endo International.
