The Chair of the Board of Governors is president of the Royal Institution for the Advancement of Learning, presiding officer of the Board of Governors, and a Board of Governors' representative on Senate and may call joint meetings of the Board of Governors and Senate. [Source: Statutes, section 2.2]​

Biography

Maryse Bertrand, Ad.E., MSc (RM)

Member at-Large Term: May 1, 2016 June 30, 2026

Chair of the Board Term: July 1, 2022 to June 30, 2026

Ms. Bertrand served as Vice-Chair of the Board from October 2018 to June 2022, as well as Vice-Chair of the Committee to Advise on Matters of Social Responsibility from October 2018 to June 2022. In her role as Chair of the Board of Governors, she is an ex-officio member of all Board Committees.

Ms. Maryse Bertrand is a Corporate Director. From 2009 to 2015, she was General Counsel and Vice-President of CBC/Radio-Canada, where she was responsible for the real estate and health, safety and environment portfolios in addition to the legal and corporate secretariat functions.

Ms. Bertrand earned a Bachelor of Civil Law with high distinction from McGill in 1980 and a Masters of Science in Risk Management from the New York University Stern School of Business in 2016. She was awarded the distinction of Advocatus Emeritus by the Quebec Bar in recognition of exceptional contribution to the practice of law in 2007.

She is a member of the Board of Directors of National Bank of Canada, Director of Metro Inc., and co-founder of the Maryse and William Brock Chair in Applied Research into Stem Cell Transplantation at Université de Montréal. Previously, she was Chair of the Board of Directors of Radio-Canada’s specialty channel, ARTV, and a Director of Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec and La Senza Inc. In addition, she was a member of the McGill Faculty of Law Advisory Board for more than 15 years.
