Student Experience Record (SER)

McGill's Co-Curricular Record (CCR) is becoming the new Student Experience Record (SER), which will be launched in Fall 2025 in the myFuture platform. This change will enhance the way we recognize and document student learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom. See more information about the SER here.

All steps should be completed well in advance of the start of your internship (no approval will be granted after you have started your internship). It may take up to two weeks for the AIO to review and process the request.

What is the Student Experience Record (SER)?

McGill University's Student Experience Record (SER) is a comprehensive tool for recording and showcasing students' experiential learning both inside and outside the classroom. Replacing the Co-Curricular Record (CCR), the SER helps students and alumni demonstrate and reflect upon their skills and experiences to support their personal, professional, and academic pursuits.

Which Faculty of Arts Internships Qualify for the SER?

The Faculty of Arts Internship Office will determine which opportunities are eligible to be recognized as an internship on the SER based on the internship definition and eligibility criteria listed on this page

The AIO cannot endorse activities that fall outside the scope of internships as defined by our office. Final eligibility decisions rest with the Faculty of Arts Internship Office, which reviews each internship on a case-by-case basis to ensure alignment with Faculty and University standards.

How to Get Your Internship Recognized on the SER?

Please note: All steps should be completed well in advance of the start of your internship.
No approval will be granted after you have started your internship.

  1. Verify that the internship meets the eligibility requirements

  2. If you are travelling outside of Canada for the internship, you must complete the mandatory* the Pre-Departure Orientation 3-6 months prior to the start of internship. The certificate of completion needs to be submitted via the web form. Students travelling to their country of citizenship are exempted from completing the orientation.

  3. Obtain a written confirmation of your internship from your host organization.
    • The written confirmation must include learning goals and outcomes, mentorship plan, hours per week, start and end date, and remuneration.
    • If done in letter format, it must be signed by your host organization. If done by screenshot of email conversation, it must clearly show the sender, the recipient, and the date the email was sent.
  4. Well before the start of the internship, submit a request for a Faculty of Arts Internship Endorsement Letter via this Microsoft Forms:   Faculty of Arts Internship Endorsement Letter - Request Form
  5. If your request is approved, the AIO will prepare a letter indicating that your internship has been endorsed by the Faculty of Arts and University-sanctioned. The letter will be sent to your McGill email.
    • Applicants meeting need-based criteria can apply for financial support through the Enriched Educational Opportunities (EEO) bursary, disbursed by the Scholarship & Student Aid Office, using the Faculty of Arts Internship Endorsement Letter.

  6. Read the Handbook for Faculty of Arts Interns to familiarize themselves with the responsibilities as an intern.
    • For summer internships, students must attend the events and workshops. For internships in Fall/Winter, the student must meet with the AIO.

  7. If you are travelling outside of Montreal for the internship, you are required to register your activity on the mandatory McGill Student Travel Registry prior to start of internship.

  8. Within two weeks of the completion of the internship, send a letter of completion to the Arts Internship Office.
    • The letter must include the duration of the internship as well as the tasks performed. Email to aio [at] mcgill.ca.
    • The letter can be emailed directly from your internship supervisor or if sent via the student, it must be signed by the host organization.
    • If done by email, the conversation must clearly show the sender, the recipient, and the date the email was sent.
  9.  Once your completion letter has been received, your internship will appear on your Student Experience Record.
