Become a Tutor

We’re always looking for new tutors! Have you mastered a McGill course? Then we encourage you to apply to tutor for it.

Apply anytime, all year long.

Eligibility

You must:

  1. Be currently enrolled in McGill courses
  2. Have obtained an A- or higher in the course(s) to be tutored.
  3. Have a CGPA of 3.2 or greater
  4. International students must have a valid study permit and Social Insurance Number (SIN)

If you have successfully completed courses at another university and are interested in tutoring these courses at McGill, you must provide:

  1. Transcript from the other university
  2. Course outline

Tutoring offered through the Tutor Matching Program is not considered course-specific tutoring, but rather tutoring offered to support a student’s specific needs. This means that tutors who are hired through the Tutor Matching Program are not assigned a specific course and may be matched for tutoring in any course they have already passed with at least an A- or greater, and they would like to tutor.

Conflicts of interest: Students can’t tutor for a course for which they are currently a teaching assistant, course grader, or any position that may cause a conflict of interest.

Tutor Responsibilities

  • Maintain confidentiality (do not share your students’ names, subsidy, etc)
  • Be on time
  • Help your student understand course content – don’t complete their assignments for them.
  • Cancel your session at least 24 hours in advance if you cannot attend. If you cancel more than 3 times per academic year without 24-hour notice we may remove you from our database.
  • Only book 1-on-1 tutoring sessions. Group tutoring must be authorized in advance by Student Accessibility and Achievement.
  • Keep an eye on time: don’t feel pressured to go beyond the agreed upon time.
  • Ask for payment at the end of each session (subsidized students need only submit the Confirm a Tutoring Session form, non-subsidized students pay you directly).
  • Let us know if you can’t take additional students.

Getting Paid

Non-subsidized tutoring:

The student will pay you directly at the end of each session.

Subsidized tutoring:

  1. Take the last 5 minutes of your session to ask the student to complete the Confirm a Tutoring Session form.
  2. Submit your hours in Workday (do a separate entry for each subsidized student; include their name and subject code in the comments section).

Having trouble with Workday?

  • Make sure you're connected to McGill's VPN if you're not on campus.
  • Click on the Enter Time button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Select Enter Time.
  • Enter your In and Out times
  • You can toggle between all days of the week in the top menu bar.

Reference Letters: If you would like a reference letter for your time spent as a tutor, we can, when possible, only confirm the dates of employment, title of your position, and your salary.
