McGill University's Department of Surgery’s first-ever Leadership Program for Surgical Residents concluded with a resounding success, marking a significant milestone in the development of future surgical leaders. Led by Associate Chair of Education Dr. Melina Vassiliou, this innovative four-week program, developed by the Division of Surgical Education (DOSE) in consultation with the McGill Executive Institute, ran from January 30 to February 27, 2025, and brought together 21 senior surgical residents and fellows from various surgical divisions.
A native Montrealer, Dr. Feldman completed her undergraduate studies in Cognitive Science at Brown University, followed by her MDCM at McGill, graduating in 1993. She completed General Surgery residency and a Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship at McGill before joining the Faculty of Medicine in 2000, becoming Full Professor in 2010. Before her appointment as Chair, she held the Steinberg-Bernstein Chair in Minimally Invasive Surgery and Innovation and directed the McGill Division of General Surgery.

On October 30, 2024, the Department of Surgery launched its first Surgical Education Retreat. Facilitated by Liz Falco, the event united a diverse group of attendees, including faculty, trainees, educators, administrators, scientists, and leaders from the education community to design the new Division of Surgical Education (DOSE). This dynamic retreat, led by Dr. Melina Vassiliou and supported by McGill experts, aimed to revolutionize surgical education through collaboration and innovation.
We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Richard Garfinkle, MD, MSc, PhD, as co-director for the Surgical Scientist Program (SSP) at McGill University. In this role, Dr. Garfinkle will oversee the research activities of surgical residents enrolled in the SSP, in coordination with McGill’s Clinician Investigator Program (CIP) and the Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) Office.
