Environmental Biology

Overview

In the Environmental Biology Major, you'll receive world-class training on the biology, conservation and ecology of plants, birds and mammals, insects, fungi and microbes.

Your courses will offer a foundation in endangered species conservation, environmental pollution and protected areas management. You’ll study how organisms adapt to changes in the environment and the consequences for ecosystems. You can even join in cutting-edge research on climate change and its effects on animals and ecosystems.

The most critical environmental challenges we face today involve biologists with specialized knowledge of human impacts on species and ecosystems. Through training in environmental biology, you can make a difference.

This major must be taken with at least one specialization. The recommended specializations are:

Student experience

Hear it from Laura, a recent McGill graduate from the Environmental Biology program, Wildlife Biology specialization:

"This program was an incredible way to gain hands-on experience in scientific research while developing a foundation of knowledge and critical thinking. My favourite course during my undergrad was the 3-week Desert Ecology field course, which had us camping through the deserts of the American southwest. It was an unforgettable way to learn about different ecosystems and execute research in a unique and challenging setting. I would highly recommend this program, as it gave me real-world experience and helped me decide on a direction for post-graduation. Mac’s small, friendly campus environment made it easy to get involved and helped me find my niche. It really prepared me for working in the worlds of research and biology, and I had no trouble finding an engaging and fulfilling career soon after graduation".

Possible minors

Minors are a great way to customize your academic experience. Many students use minors to pursue interests outside their major, while others choose minors to complement their degree.
