2001 Advanced Study Institute

3 rd ANNUAL ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE
IN CULTURAL PSYCHIATRY

May 31 - June 1, 2001
Montreal, Quebec

"Models of Training in Culture and Mental Health"

This Advanced Institute will explore models of training for intercultural work in mental health. How can clinicians prepare to work with culturally diverse patients? What are the components of cultural competence? Can generic strategies substitute for specific cultural knowledge? What is the role of ethnic matching? How should health professionals be trained to work with interpreters and culture-brokers? Academics, researchers and clinicians will present models and methods of training from Australia, Canada, France,, the U.S. and U.K. Panel discussions will examine the explicit and implicit assumptions of different models, and their fit with specific social contexts.
