About the Surgical Innovation Program

First semester: Team building, Needs finding within a clinical environment, Needs screening based on business, engineering and clinical perspectives.
Second semester: Prototype development, Proof of concept, Business plan.
Summer semester: Internship with an industry partner.

Teaching is delivered by engineers, clinicians, industry experts, entrepreneurs, attorneys and business faculty, and our program follows the approach of Learn & Design & Innovate.

Family History and Age — Not Ancestry — Drive Decisions to Decline Genetic Testing After Breast Cancer Diagnosis

A new study led by Dr. Stephanie M. Wong, Surgical Oncologist and joint faculty member in McGill's Departments of Surgery and Oncology, finds that women who declined genetic testing after a breast cancer diagnosis tended to be older and had no family history of cancer — not differences in ancestry, race, or ethnicity. Published in JAMA Network Open, the study found over 90% of eligible patients accepted testing when it was offered free and universally, pointing the way toward more equitable access to genetic testing.
