What is counselling?
Counselling is a space for you to discuss personal and professional challenges with a trained professional. This may help you better understand your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, learn tangible tools to navigate life’s inevitable stressors, and maintain or reestablish well-being throughout your training.
How much does a counselling session cost?
Zero dollars! This service is included in your tuition fee.
Is counselling really confidential?
Yes! We provide a confidential environment where you can discuss concerns freely. No Program Director, Program Coordinator, Chief Resident, or colleague will know that you have sought our services without your consent: No one!
Who uses counselling services?
Counselling is open to all McGill residents and fellows, and hundreds of sessions take place every year! We serve people from all backgrounds and identities who are in a variety of specialties and at all levels of training, including fellowship.
Do I need a mental health diagnosis to access counselling?
Not at all, and there is no such thing as too small a topic to come see us! Residents and fellows come to counselling for multiple reasons, including but not limited to: exam stress, work-life harmony, clinical performance, career doubts, mistreatment and discrimination in the workplace, romantic relationship tensions, family dynamics, grief, burnout, depression, and anxiety. It is totally okay to reach out for preventative reasons as well!
Is counselling a good use of my time?
Everyone’s experience in counselling is different, and many residents and fellows find it helpful. Some people particularly appreciate being able to talk to someone neutral, open, and non-judgmental. For other people, gaining perspective about a specific situation or learning tangible practices to work towards greater well-being is what they feel most satisfied about.
What if I’m not sure counselling is for me?
You may just give it a try and see! We are here for you, and you don’t have to commit to any set number of counselling sessions.
How can I book a counselling session?
You may visit our Counselling Appointments webpage, select a Wellness Consultant from your respective campus, click on “Book an Appointment” under the Wellness Consultant’s name, and follow the instructions on our booking page.
