Sophia joined the Dept of Demography at Université de Montréal as an Assistant Professor this fall. Her research is broadly concerned with roles that marriage, family, and gender play for health and well-being and is mainly in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Chae studies how family structures, particularly those affected by parental death, divorce, and migration, are related to child and adolescent outcomes, including sexual debut, marriage, schooling, and home-leaving. In addition, she investigates the influence of gender, mainly through the gendered nature of marriage, on the health and well-being of women in developing contexts.
