The Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases provides consultation service in all aspects of infectious diseases including significant viral, bacterial and fungal infections. The division specializes  in the areas of infection control, immunological aspects of infectious diseases and microbial pathogenesis of disease.  It is actively involved in vaccine trials and other aspects of clinical research.

At present, the Division includes six Infectious Diseases specialists, 3 of whom are also certified in Medical Microbiology, another who is also certified in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, another who specializes in HIV, another who has a Masters in Epidemiology.  This allows for a multi-disciplinary approach to our patients and their issues. A dedicated full time Assistant chief Technologist is also assigned in the lab to supervise the Microbiology training aspects of the program.

Pediatric Infectious Diseases is a two-year residency program, primarily based at the Montreal Children's Hospital. It is integrated with the Adult Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology training programs, sharing a structured education curriculum which allows for more diversified educational opportunities and includes weekly joint Academic Half-Day and Journal clubs.

The two-year curriculum includes the following:

·         Pediatric Infectious Diseases consult service: 10 months

·         Adult Infectious Diseases consult service (at an affiliated McGill University Hospital): 2 months

·         Microbiology (Bacteriology, Virology, Parasitology, Mycobacteria and Fungal): minimum of 3 months, up to 6 months

·         Minimum of 1.5 blocks in Infection Control and Prevention

·         Minimum of 1.5 blocks doing Antimicrobial Stewardship

·         Minimum of 1 block in Public Health and preventative medicine

·         Research/Elective: 2-7 months

The training sites include the Montreal Children’s Hospital, as well as the Royal Victoria, Montreal General and Jewish General Hospitals (for the adult ID rotations). The residents can also do electives at other accredited sites.
