MIPC’s ninth edition tackles nature restoration through sustainable finance

The McGill International Portfolio Challenge (MIPC), part of the Sustainable Growth Initiative, successfully concluded its 9th edition in November, reaffirming its position as a leading experiential learning initiative at Desautels. This year’s challenge—mobilizing financial capital to reverse nature loss—drew 83 university teams from more than 15 countries, supported by 15+ corporate partners and evaluated by 30+ judges who joined the semi-finals and finals on campus.

Soutar Career Centre gives Desautels grads an edge

It’s a tough job market for recent graduates, but a McGill education gives students an edge. “My time at McGill was foundation for getting the job I have today,” says Andrei Adam (BCom’24) a consultant with McKinsey & Company in Toronto. At Desautels, students have unlimited access to coaches and career support through the Soutar Career Centre. Adam relied on these career coaching services when he was a student, seeking guidance on potential employers and feedback on his resume. He landed an internship with McKinsey as a second-year student, and got a job offer in his third year.

McGill researchers develop stretchable, biodegradable battery using eco-friendly acids

Researchers with McGill’s Trottier Institute for Sustainability in Engineering and Design have developed a stretchable, eco-friendly battery suitable for use in wearable and implantable devices. The battery, which uses citric or lactic acid and gelatin to achieve flexibility and performance without relying on toxic materials, stands to reduce electronic waste.

As part of the festivities, McGill’s Bellairs Research Institute hosted a day-long Science Adventure for local schoolchildren featuring a visit from McGill’s Redpath Museum and the Physics Outreach Committee.

McGill researchers track boulders’ influence on snow melt, watersheds using unique combination of methods

Thanks to their use of a unique methodology, a McGill-led research team has obtained new insights into how boulders affect snow melt in mountainous northern environments, with implications for local water resources.  

The team found that snow near boulders melts faster, not only because rocks radiate heat, but also due to subtle processes that reshape the snow’s surface. This information will help researchers understand how small-scale processes affect downstream water resources.
