Dr. Lena Palaniyappan has earned a place among the world’s top 10 schizophrenia researchers, according to the latest rankings by ScholarGPS™. Over the past five years, he is ranked 9th globally and 1st in Canada, reflecting his outstanding contributions to the field. This recognition is based on a combination of scholarly productivity (number of publications), impact (citations), and quality (h-index).

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Paulina Bajsarowicz as the new Co-Residency Training Program Director for the Department of Psychiatry. She will be succeeding Dr. Marie-Christine Noël, who has stepped down to pursue her academic career at Université de Sherbrooke. In her new role, Dr. Bajsarowicz will work closely with Dr. Nancy Low and will be responsible for the development and advancement of all aspects of the residency program within the department. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr.

This year’s winner of the Leyton Addiction Research Prize competition is Jessica Ahrens, for her paper entitled “Convergence of Cannabis and Psychosis on the Dopamine System ". Jessica Ahrens is supervised by Dr. Lena Palaniyappan and co-supervised by Dr. Clifford Cassidy.

Tariffs drive up prices for businesses, but some companies are finding a creative loophole to avoid some US tariffs. When a company imports a tariffed good, it pays a tariff. But it doesn’t pay a tariff if the goods are only passing through on the way to a final destination. This creates an incentive for US companies to store inventory in Canada. They can park products here until they sell them, and only pay tariffs on goods that are actually bound for the US market.

With a hot start to summer and the swimming season, health experts are urging caution around water. Drowning remains one of the most common causes of accidental death in Canadian children.

Hussein Wissanji, MD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatric Surgery at McGill University and a pediatric emergency physician at the Montreal Children’s Hospital, is available to speak on how to prevent drowning incidents, particularly in young children.
