An avid environmentalist, Thomas, or Thom as he was known to most, was passionate about using the law to help others and improve the world around him. He was a cherished member of the McGill Law community who left us too soon, and is deeply missed by his family, long-time partner, friends, professors, and colleagues. Thomas came to McGill with a brilliant academic background, including a Master’s in Political Science from the University of Montreal and a bidisciplinary bachelor degree in Philosophy and Political Science from University of Ottawa as well as several publications already under his belt. He was the recipient of McGill Law’s Gary Nachshen Entrance Bursary for academic standing as well as the Lyon William Jacobs Award, given to a student who shows the most progress in their studies.
Thomas manifestait un vif intérêt pour le droit de la confidentialité des données, le droit autochtone et le droit de l'alimentation et de l'environnement, et il cherchait toujours à en apprendre davantage sur ces sujets. Rédacteur senior de la Revue de droit de McGill, Thomas consacrait une grande partie de son temps et de son énergie à disséminer de l’information et de la recherche juridique dans l'intérêt du public, notamment aux organismes sans but lucratif axés sur l'alimentation (par l'entremise de la Clinique juridique d'alimentation et d'agriculture de McGill), aux fondateurs de jeunes entreprises (par l'entremise de la Compass Startup Legal Clinic) et au grand public (par l'entremise de la Clinique d'information juridique de McGill). Il a également fourni une aide considérable à la recherche en tant que stagiaire au Centre québécois du droit de l'environnement, au cabinet de propriété intellectuelle DrapeauLex et chez l'avocat d'intérêt public Franklin Gertler.
Thomas was always doing work to help others, even before his time at McGill. He was a co-founder of the Société des jeunes philanthropes de Montréal, an organization that encourages young professionals to support young people experiencing homelessness. He also worked for Action Réfugiés Montréal and served as the coordinator of the United Way Outaouais Allocations and Agency Relations Committee.
Thomas was called to the Quebec Bar in 2020 and completed his articling with Therrien Couture Joli-coeur, where he also began his legal career.
Toutes les personnes qui ont connu et aimé Thomas savent qu'il était passionné par la vie et qu'il avait un sens de l'aventure et du courage qui lui permettait de la vivre pleinement. Un surfeur, campeur et randonneur passionné, il a parcouru le tronçon du Maine du sentier des Appalaches non pas une, ni deux, mais trois fois. Il était un joueur de hockey de compétition, un DJ et un musicien, et un voyageur qui a passé du temps en Asie, en Europe, en Amérique centrale et en Australie. Il élargissait constamment ses connaissances et s'éduquait de plusieurs façons, notamment en essayant de nouvelles expériences de vie comme lorsqu'il a travaillé sur une ferme avec sa compagne, Sophie. Il a aussi été un moniteur de camp adoré et surtout un ami, un partenaire, un fils et un frère loyal, gentil et aimant, qui laisse un trou béant dans la vie de toutes les personnes qui ont eu la chance de le connaître et d'être dans son orbite.
Thomas, a scholarship in your name is the least we can do to honour you and the warmth and light you brought to the McGill Law Faculty, and to the lives of your colleagues and professors there. We are proud to establish a fund that will support students who demonstrate a commitment to public interest, with a special emphasis on environmental and food justice, indigenous matters, or mental health initiatives.
