Team 4: The Zheng He Voyages
Team 4 examines Zheng He’s early fifteenth-century voyages across the Indian Ocean. It focuses on 3 main topics:
- the human-environment context for Zheng He’s voyages
- the intellectual and technical context for Zheng He’s voyages
- the impact of the Zheng He voyages on Chinese maritime trade and foreign relations.
Team 4 Leader: Zhongping Chen, University of Victoria
Chen was born and grew up in China. He received his B.A. and M.A. from Nanjing University in 1982 and 1984 respectively, and his PhD from the University of Hawaii in 1998. He has taught at Nanjing Normal University, McGill, Trent University and the University of Victoria.
