Training for Supervisors

Graduate supervision is the backbone of graduate student success. In 2014, Senate approved a revision to the Regulations on Graduate Student Supervision, which requires that new faculty members complete an orientation on graduate supervision.

Starting In 2021, this supervision orientation takes place online through a self-paced myCourses module titled: Graduate Supervision @ McGill: Policies and Best Practices. The module shares best practices in:

  • Building a supervisory relationship
  • Giving effective feedback
  • Fostering good work-life balance
  • Navigating conflict
  • Helping students at risk

New faculty members are enrolled in this course in the fall term and should complete it by the end of the winter term. After completing the online course, faculty members complete an in-person, discussion-based workshop.

The online course and the workshop are open to any faculty member at McGill. Request access by emailing communications.gps [at] mcgill.ca (subject: Requesting%20Access%20to%20the%20Graduate%20Supervision%20Module) .
