Graduate supervision is the backbone of graduate student success. In 2014, Senate approved a revision to the Regulations on Graduate Student Supervision, which requires that new faculty members complete an orientation on graduate supervision.
Since 2021, this supervision orientation takes place online through a self-paced myCourses module. In 2025, the myCourses supervision orientation was revised with a new title, "Graduate Supervision at McGill: For Supervisors." The orientation shares best practices in:
- Building a supervisory relationship
- Giving effective feedback
- Fostering good work-life balance
- Navigating conflict
- Helping students at risk
New faculty members are enrolled in this course in the fall term and should complete it by the end of the winter term.
The online course and the workshop are open to any faculty member at McGill. Request access by emailing communications.gps [at] mcgill.ca (subject: Requesting%20Access%20to%20the%20Graduate%20Supervision%20Module) .
