Dr. Fred Paccaud is a public health doctor. He trained in clinical medicine in Lausanne and elsewhere in Switzerland, and then specialized in public health in Brussels and London.

Between 1988 and 2017, he headed the Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine of the Centre hospitalier universitaire vaudois. At the same time, he was Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Lausanne. He has held many public health positions in Switzerland and abroad, including as a member of the Scientific Council of the National Fund for Scientific Research (Bern) and as Director of the Swiss School of Public Health (Zürich). He also served as Vice-Rector of the University of Lausanne between 1991 and 1995. His scientific activities have focused on the epidemiology and prevention of chronic and degenerative diseases (including in countries in epidemiological transition) and the organization of health systems.
