Preferred First Name - Students

Students may use a Preferred First Name while studying at McGill.

Your preferred first name is the name by which you are normally addressed, and can be different than your legal first name.

Since 2009, students at McGill have been able to use their preferred first name for certain purposes while studying at McGill.

To add a Preferred First Name, change your McGill Email address (Alias), update Your McGill ID Card, or for other services related to preferred first names, please visit the Student Records webpage.

Please note that the preferred first name procedure will not change your name on all McGill internal documents.

Update Legal Name

To update your legal name, please visit the Student Records webpage.

McGill University is on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg nations. We acknowledge and thank the diverse Indigenous peoples whose presence marks this territory on which peoples of the world now gather.

For more information about traditional territory and tips on how to make a land acknowledgement, visit our Land Acknowledgement webpage.
