Accessing Files on 025EMF3 from Mac OS

Disclaimer: The information provided below is an unsupported ‘as-is’ method for accessing 025EMF home directory files directly from Mac OS X (10.6 and newer). If there are any problems reproducing these instructions, EMF will be unable to guarantee additional help or support.

While accessing information please ensure you adhere to the Policy on the Responsible Use of McGill Information Technology Resources, available on the Secretariat’s website.

Prior to accessing data, you must:

  • Ensure your workstation is up-to-date with security patches and
  • Ensure you have antivirus software installed and virus signatures are up to date.

Step 1: VPN

In order to access your files (outside the University), you must setup VPN (Virtual Private Network).

Go to the IT Knowledge Base article on Virtual Private Network (VPN), select your operating system and follow the setup instructions. Frequently asked questions and best practices are also available.

You will require administrative privileges on your workstation to setup VPN.

If you encounter problems setting up your VPN connection, please contact McGill Central IT Service Desk.

After you have setup and established a connection with VPN, you are ready to access your files.

Do not save your username and password if you are sharing the computer.


Step 2: Mapping a drive to files on 025EMF3

  • On the Finder Menu Bar, click on Go -> Connect to Server.

Path to map

Enter the server path to your home directory. The path depends on which department you are registered in. Please see the following options:

Your McGill Short Username:

To verify your McGill Short Username, log into Minerva with your 9-digit McGill ID number and PIN and go to the Personal menu.

** You should be prompted to enter your McGill Username/password.

** For your McGill Username --> Do not use first.last [at] mail.mcgill.ca. You must use your McGill Short Username format

i.e. McGill Username = (campus\’McGill Short Username’)
