Last October 27 and 28, the Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurship hosted the inaugural Dobson Day in NY. In collaboration with the Ministère de l'Économie, de l'Innovation et de l'Énergie, this online startup tour aimed to introduce and connect a select group of retail focused Dobson entrepreneurs to the dynamic NYC ecosystem of investors.
Fourteen Dobson startups benefited from one-on-one coaching and mentoring, attended ShopTalk retail week where they engaged in meetings with potential clients, partners and investors, participated in TechDay, the largest startup event in the US and finally, pitched to a hundred potential investors and industry leaders during a two-day event. A panel of retail experts were on hand to help guide the conversation during these two days, giving insights into the NYC ecosystem and the opportunities that lie beyond Canadian borders.
“The sectors you have decided to play in have been inspiring, very much disruptive...” mentioned industry leader Yolanda M. Wardowski. “... you are tackling big solutions.”
Attending Founders came away from the experience with insightful feedback from industry, precious business leads and for some, tangible investor interest. Three teams received special recognition for their strong potential and disruptive concepts: FitDrive, Interius Farms and RailVision Analytics.
“We are extremely pleased with the outcome...” states Kika Armata, Program Manager at the Dobson Centre. “...many Dobson Founders have since connected with potential investors who they would not have had the opportunity to meet otherwise.”
We wish to extend our thanks to the Ministère de l’Économie et de l’Innovation du Québec for making this event possible and to the panel of industry experts Tim Ceci, Gregory Larkin, Safia Morsly-Fikai, Lora Tisi and Yolanda M. Wardowski who brilliantly animated the conversation throughout the event.
