Congratulations to Desautels BCom students for their outstanding performance at this year’s Jeux du Commerce (JDC), the largest student case competition in Eastern Canada. For the first time, JDC took place fully online and brought together 700 participants from 11 universities.

The Desautels delegation of 57 BCom students was led by Guillaume Ouimet and Sonam Levasseur as part of Desautels Management Case Competitions (DMCC). McGill finished with a total of nine podiums including two first place wins.

A team of Desautels students and alumni has reached the semifinal round of impact200, McGill’s Bicentennial Sustainability Challenge for students and recent alumni. The winning team, which includes analytics BCom students, Master of Management in Analytics (MMA) students, Desautels alumni, and a software engineer student, created a platform that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance food security in Montreal. They will join 29 other teams for the semifinal round of the competition on March 16-18, 2021.

This year’s case study, which focused on themes of social inequality and protectionism, was more relevant than ever in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hosted by the Bensadoun School of Retail Management, the first-ever Retail Innovation Challenge concluded on June 21 with a McGill MMA student bringing home the top prize.

Bringing together 80 teams from 20 universities across Canada, the event challenged students to aid the economic recovery of small and medium businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. With a focus on the food sector, the event drew four companies from the restaurant and grocery industries.

Four McGill students took home second place at the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) Global Case Competition, the largest case competition in the world, over the weekend.

BCom students Ariane Dusablon, Raphael Roel, Anne Sophie Levee, and Quentin Amaudry represented McGill University in the case competition, which invited students to solve a real-life business challenge faced by Novo Nordisk, the second largest insulin producer worldwide.

Congratulations to Desautels students Olivier Arsenault (MMF’20), Pier-Olivier Laflèche (MMF’20), Sai Kanthasamy (BCom’20), and Mitch McEwen (MMF’20) for placing first in the Quebec regional CFA Research Challenge.

“It was a great experience and privilege to represent McGill and the MMF program,” says McEwen. “We owe a great deal to our advisors Professor Vadim di Pietro and Rebeca Yang, CFA.”

The team will head to New York in April to compete in the North America finals.

A team of five McGill students secured second place at the International Youth Leadership Finance Summit, hosted by the Master of Finance program at the Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance at Shanghai Jiao Tong University from January 11–14. The event brought together 27 teams from universities across the world, including Stanford University, Columbia University and the London School of Economics, to explore how sci-tech companies are empowered through innovation and finance.
