The Entrepreneurship & Innovation (E&I) Initiative was proud to support this year’s Dare to Venture student startup pitch competition, hosted by the McGill Entrepreneurship Society (MES), by contributing half of the $1,000 grand prize and participating in the expert judging panel. Dr. Niels Billou represented E&I as a member of the judging panel, helping evaluate the finalist pitches.

Large language models are changing the way we do business - or at least that’s what the companies that make AI tools will tell you. In practice, many companies know that AI tools are very powerful but are still figuring out how best to use them. This year's McGill-FIAM Asset Management Hackathon competition asked business students to put large language models to the test and devise a bottom-up approach to building a portfolio powered by AI.

Last year, after months of hard work and 'brandstorming', two McGill Desautels teams took the podium at the 31st annual L'Oréal Brandstorm competition, competing against top teams from across Canada! Madison Laxer and her fellow Master of Management in Retailing (MMR) teammates, Aditi Bali and Supreet Kaur, took third place. Madison reflects on her experience participating in the case competition and how it even led to an internship.

The inaugural McGill Desautels Management Science Case Writing Competition, organized by Assistant Professor (Teaching) Rob Glew and supported by EY, turns the tables on the traditional case competition format. Since May, 34 BCom students worked to write case studies on their experience with operations management and analytics on their summer work placements.

McGill Desautels continues its hot streak in the case competition arena with another podium result, placing 2nd overall in the prestigious 2023 Copenhagen Business School Invitational Case competition. 12 schools flew to Copenhagen and were challenged to help Vestas, a leading company in wind power plant solutions, leverage its position to create new businesses in hydrogen technologies and develop a strategy for 2030.

On February 3, first-year McGill Desautels MBAs participated in the annual Desautels Case Cup competition. Judged by alumni, this year’s case focused on MassChallenge, a program created by John Harthorne and Akhil Nigam that provides support and funding for startup companies. Thanks to the open-source community, the organization which began as a for-profit evolved to include mentorship, encouraging creativity, building communities and supporting startups created by marginalized and disenfranchised groups.

Congratulations to the McGill Desautels accounting team for their first-place win at the I.C.B.C. case competition. The team consisting of Thomas Wakeham and Francois Kik was coached and assisted by Julia Scott and Peg Brunelle. The Inter-Collegiate Business Competition (I.C.B.C.) is one of the oldest case competitions in the world, held annually at the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University.
