We are very pleased to announce that all of the undergraduate programs in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering have recently been given full accreditation for the next three years by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). The Department would like to thank all of the academic and professional staff who worked extremely hard to prepare for this accreditation visit, and also the visiting committee of the CEAB for their diligence in reviewing our programs.

  • Congratulations to Binh Le Huy for receiving the First Place Best Student Poster Presentation Award at the Innovative Green Wood Fibre Products Network Semii-Annual Meeting in Vancouber, BC on November 13-15, 2012.  The title of the presentation was "Broadband InN-nanowire based infrared spectroscopy for nanoscale moisture detection in wood fibre networks".
  • Congratulations to Songrui Zhao, supervised by Professor Zetian Mi, for receiving the Outstanding Student Paper Award from the 29th North American Molecular Beam Epitaxy Conference held in Stone Mountain Park, Georgia, October 14 -17, 2012.  The title of his presentation is "Unveil the intrinsic correlated electrical and optical properties of InN nanowires".
  • Congratulations to K. Hossain, A. Assra and Professor B. Champagne, for winning the Best Paper Award  - Physical Layer Track on “Multiband joint detection with correlated spectral occupancy in wideband cognitive radios,” IEEE Int. Symp. on Wireless Communication Systems, Paris, France, Aug. 2012.
  • Congratulations to Prof. Jeremy Cooperstock and his team for being the Grand Prize Winners of the Mozilla/NSF Ignite Challenge's "Brainstorming Round" for their idea Real-Time Emergency Response Observation and Supervision.  The Shared Reality Lab's submission was selected out of over 300 entries.  Detailed announcement here.
  • Congratulations to McGill's IEEE Student Branch for receiving the IEEE Region 7 Exemplary Student Branch Award for 2011-2012.  Mr. Mojtaba Vaezi accepted the certificate at the 2012 IEEE Canada Student Congress in Mississauga on September 15th.
  • Congratulations to Mr. Muhammad Kabir, supervised by Professor Roni Khazaka, for winning an honorable mention at the student paper competition of the 2012 International Microwave Symposium, in Montreal on June 17-22, 2012 . There were 26 finalists in the competition this year, which amounted to only 7.3% of the total student papers submitted and considered for the competition.   • Congratulations to Professors V.P. Chodavarapu and S. Musallam  for having their recent publication “Silicon optoelectronic microelectrodes with integrated oxygen sensors for brain–machine interfaces” selected as a “Featured Article” in the Micro & Nano Letters Journal, June 2012.  Please see the link for more information: here .
  • Congratulations to Professor Odile Liboiron-Ladouceur for winning the Premio Venezia 2011 Award from the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada for her research collaboration with the Institute of Communication, Information and Perception Technologies at the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna in Pisa.  The award was presented at a ceremony held in Montreal on February 1st, 2012.  Detailed announcement here.  

Graduate Student Positions Available

  • A new NSERC CREATE (Collaborative Research and Training Experience) Program in Medical Image Analysis (CREATE-MIA) has launched at McGill.  In addition to the opportunity of studying with one of seven world-class academicians from McGill, ÉTS, or the Université de Sherbrooke,  CREATE-MIA adds professional skills training and provides real-world experience in finding solutions to problems challenging the medical imaging industry today through industrial internships. Trainees (undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral fellows) completing the program will be well-prepared to embark on  their careers, in industry or academia. Interested potential ECE students should look at the work being done by Professor Tal Arbel (http://www.cim.mcgill.ca/~arbel/) in the Intelligent Systems Group and then go to http://www.cim.mcgill.ca/create-mia to find out more about what is involved in CREATE-MIA, what funding is possible, and how to apply.

  • Research positions at the Research associate and Post-doctoral fellow levels in Wireless Telecommunication are available for suitable candidates. Some of these positions could be also filled with well qualified Ph.D. students. While all applicants in this field will be considered, the project topic is in the area of Cooperative Spectrum Sensing for Cognitive Wireless Communication, and the requirements for the available positions include documented experience in any three of the following subjects: detection and estimation, spectrum sensing, data fusion in wireless sensor networks, modern channel coding techniques, statistical inference using graphical models, cooperative communication, and non-coherent digital communication.  If you are interested please apply by sending an email to harry [dot] leib [at] mcgill [dot] ca describing you background, and attaching a CV as well as three publications that demonstrate the applicant experience relevant to the project.
