Professional Agrology


Overview

Agrologists are professionals who advise farmers, governments, industry, media and the public about all things related to agriculture. They specialize in plants, soils, livestock, agricultural engineering or economics. 

Following this program at McGill will prepare you to be a professional agrologist. It is the only specialization that will qualify you to sit the admission exam of the Ordre des agronomes du Québec (OAQ). Only members of OAQ can legally practice agrology in Québec.  

This specialization must be taken with the Agro-Environmental Sciences Major and a second specialization such as Animal Production, Ecological Agriculture, Plant Production, or with the Agricultural Economics Major and the Agri-business Specialization.

When taken with the recommended majors and  specializations indicated in the overview, you can be eligible to become a professional agrologist under the OAQ. The knowledge and skills you gain can lead to several exciting career paths. You may also wish to pursue graduate studies in the field.

Faculty

Several of our instructors are members of the Ordre des Agronomes du Quebec.  They have broad experience and practical knowledge of agriculture and related fields, and of agricultural realities in Québec as well as elsewhere in the world.  Their professional links with the agricultural world bring fresh perspectives to the classroom. Our Faculty conduct pioneering research on sustainable agriculture.


Student experience

Students in Professional Agrology participate in a paid professional internship during the last summer of their studies. Recent graduates in Professional Agrology are in high demand, and many employers see interns as future employees. Our small cohorts lead to a strong sense of community among Agrology students.
