McGill Intercampus Shuttle & REM Transition FAQ
Last updated, May 18, 2026
The McGill intercampus shuttle has been an important part of daily life for many in our community. We want to be transparent about what's changing, what isn't, and how we'll make decisions going forward.
The Réseau express métropolitain (REM) Anse-à-l’Orme branch opened May 18, 2026. McGill’s intercampus shuttle continues to operate through December 2026 while the University evaluates whether the REM meets community needs.
Will the McGill intercampus shuttle continue to operate now that the REM is open?
Yes. The shuttle will continue operating until at least December 2026. McGill will only consider discontinuing the shuttle once we confirm that the REM provides a reliable, accessible, and efficient alternative for our community.
Is the shuttle being discontinued?
Not at this time. The REM Anse-à-l’Orme station opening on May 18 does not trigger any immediate change to shuttle operations.
Will the shuttle schedule change now that the REM is open?
No changes are planned at this time. Any future adjustments will be communicated in advance on the McGill Transport website.
When will McGill make a final decision about the shuttle’s future?
There is no fixed deadline. The shuttle is confirmed through December 2026, and McGill will provide ample notice before any change.
How do I get to Macdonald Campus using the REM?
Take the REM to Anse-à-l’Orme, the terminal station on the new western branch. From there:
· STM Route 210 connects the station to John Abbott College and Macdonald Campus during the weekday, and STM Route 212 on the weekend.
· STM routes were redesigned on May 18 to align with REM service.
· Plan your trip using the STM’s route simulator: Bus Network Redesign | Société de transport de Montréal
How close is the REM station to campus?
The Anse-à-l’Orme station is located within the Island of Montreal (Zone A). It is connected to campus via STM bus service.
What are the REM’s hours and frequency?
Information regarding the REM’s hours and frequency can be found directly on the REM’s website: Anse-à-l'Orme Station | REM
Is there a cost difference between the shuttle and the REM?
The McGill intercampus shuttle is free for all McGill students. Staff and faculty travelling for official university business between campuses may request shuttle passes — please contact McGill Parking and Transportation Services for more information. The REM and connecting STM bus service require a transit fare. For current fare information, please visit Réseau express métropolitain - Home
How long does the REM journey take compared to the shuttle and does it require a transfer?
Travel time via REM and connecting bus is comparable to the shuttle for most users, though individual times will vary depending on your starting point.
Unlike the shuttle, which travels directly between campuses, the REM route involves taking the train to Anse-à-l'Orme station and then connecting to an STM bus to reach Macdonald Campus.
Is the REM accessible for people with disabilities or mobility needs?
Yes. The REM is fully universally accessible, including:
· Level boarding
· Elevators
· Onboard heating and air conditioning
Why might the shuttle end after December 2026?
If the REM fully meets community needs, the shuttle may no longer be required.
With the opening of the REM and the launch of a dedicated STM bus connection to Macdonald Campus from the Anse-à-l’Orme station, travel options between campuses are changing.
The REM provides:
· Fast, reliable travel unaffected by road congestion
· Direct links to the metro, EXO and the broader REM network
· Frequent, all-day service including evenings and weekends
· Better comfort and amenities, including air conditioning, heating and free WiFi
How will McGill decide whether to discontinue the shuttle?
We will evaluate:
· REM reliability
· Accessibility for all community members
· Travel times and convenience
· Community feedback
· Environmental impact
Will there be a transition period?
Yes. If the shuttle is discontinued, McGill will provide clear instructions, support, and advance notice.
I live downtown and study at Mac. Will the REM work for me?
The REM connects directly to the Montreal metro, offering seamless transfers and frequent service. McGill will continue to evaluate whether this meets community needs during the 2026 transition period
What environmental benefits does the REM offer?
The REM is an electric, automated light-rail system that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to road-based transit.
How can I share feedback about the REM or shuttle?
