Abstract:

What happens when we consider the ecosystem of mixed music practice in all its richness and complexity? What dynamic relationships exist between ideation, performance, computer and instrumental techniques as orchestration, between their limits, affordances, and the tastes and interests of the different communities that practice these musics? In this presentation, Pierre Alexandre will present the state of his thinking in 25 years of mixed chamber music practice, ignoring once and for all the boundaries between his practices, integrating his popular and noise music techniques, his electroacoustic-influenced concepts of gestalt perception, and his collaborative political leanings of the 'free' improvised music milieu. From these aesthetic and political ideas and biases, he will expose the ramifications of rendering musical ideas into the reality of a mixed-media piece, specifically in the project of translating the electroacoustic piece unseulmotnesuffitpas1 into the piece for cello and electronics unseulmotnesuffitpas3, for (and with) Seth Parker Woods, from the preliminary sessions to the patching to the score and his orchestral thinking.
