Dr. Menzies has a long history of involvement in tuberculosis care and research, beginning with two and a half years in Lesotho, Africa, where he was first exposed (literally) to tuberculosis with all its devastation. In Montreal, he developed a tuberculosis research program that combined clinical and epidemiological studies with a large, multidisciplinary clinical service at the Montreal Chest Institute andthe Public Health Unit of Montreal. He developed and led international collaborative groups in nosocomial transmission of TB, MDR-TB treatment, INH-resistant TB treatment, and latent TB treatment.

Current Research Projects:

  • Phase 2 and Phase 3 randomized clinical trials of novel TB preventive therapy, individual patient data meta-analyses of treatment of TB disease, including multi-drug resistant TB, INH resistant TB, use of high-dose Rifampin for TB disease treatment, and treatment of TB infection.
  • Research interests also include the diagnosis of TB infection through TB skin tests and blood-based assays. He has an extensive network of collaborators across Canada and in many other countries for these studies. As Director of the McGill WHO Collaborating Centre for TB research, he works closely with the Global TB group at the World Health Organization as well.
