Amrita Daftary -Affiliate Member

Dr. Amrita Daftary is a TB social scientist and advocate of people affected by TB. She uses qualitative, participatory, and implementation science methods to address social inequities and stigma in TB, including drug-resistant TB and TB-associated comorbidities such as HIV and mental health. Dr. Daftary works with communities and clinical researchers in southern Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe/Central Asia. She also supports building equity and people-centred orientations within global policy-related efforts.

She is the founding director of Social Science & Health Innovation for Tuberculosis (SSHIFTB), a borderless network of TB social scientists and community representatives. Her primary appointment is at the School of Global Health, York University, where she teaches health promotion and directs the PhD program in Global Health. She is also an adjunct professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto, and an associate professor at the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa, University of KwaZulu-Natal. At McGill, Dr. Daftary directs a qualitative research methods course as part of the Global Health Programs ’ annual Summer Institute.

Current Research Projects: 

  • 2025-2028: Developing a global framework to address gender-based violence in women affected by TB, SSHRC, PI.
  • 2022-2027: Adaptive evaluation of mHealth and conventional adherence support interventions to optimize outcomes with new treatment regimens for drug-resistant tuberculosis and HIV in South Africa, NIH, co-investigator.
  • 2022-2026: A global partnership to elevate a social science gaze on the problem of tuberculosis, SSHRC, PI.
  • 2020-2025: Multi-level and intersectional stigma and other social determinant effects on TB case detection, care, and treatment outcomes: the MISSED TB outcomes study, NIH, co-investigator.
