Academic Tracks in Surgery

It is required that all faculty members engage in teaching at the bedside, in clinics, and/or in the operating rooms. Faculty are also required to teach learners and/or peers for a minimum of 2 hours per year of formal teaching* as a requirement for their academic appointment. Surgeons may change between tracks over time. Based on a minimum 40-hour work week, the suggested frameworks for time distributions are flexible and presented as a guideline range within which specific percentages can be designated depending on the envisioned role and expectations of the recruited faculty member.

*formal teaching may take the form of lectures to undergraduate students, residents during academic half day within Surgical Foundations or within your discipline, surgical grand rounds or division rounds, in the graduate programs in Experimental Surgery, serving on graduate student research committee, participating in an activity at the simulation centre, development of new online educational material for students or residents, or McGill Continuous Professional Development Program
