Implementation Science for NCD Prevention and Management | June 3-5 2026
COURSE FORMAT
Online only. The course will be live to online participants, approximately from 9:00 AM-12:00 PM (Montreal time) each day, June 3-5, 2026. All content will be recorded and accessible to participants until July 1, 2026.
DESCRIPTION
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have a significant health, social, and economic impact on individuals, their families, and society as a whole, with a particularly high burden in low-and middle-income countries. To address this challenge, we need to implement effective interventions in primary care settings to enhance efforts toward the prevention and management of NCDs. Using an interactive approach, this course aims to introduce participants to implementation science in primary care settings, including core topics such as an overview of theories, models and frameworks; approaches for meaningful engagement with interest-holders; adapting evidence-based interventions to specific contexts; and implementation designs and evaluation. Participants will have the opportunity for cross-cultural learning through discussion and reflection on case studies related to the prevention and management of NCDs in primary care settings. Participants will be equipped with introductory knowledge and skills to implement evidence-based interventions in their settings to prevent and manage NCDs.

CONTENT
This course will consist of readings, lectures and discussions. Topics include:
- Implementation science concepts, highlighting differences with intervention effectiveness research
- Commonly used theories, models, and frameworks in implementation science
- Relevant implementation research outcomes and designs
- Strengths and challenges of various implementation strategies and techniques, focusing on adaptation, sustainability, equity, and real-world effectiveness.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, participants will:
- Define and distinguish implementation science and research and concepts
- Produce relevant implementation science research questions
- Identify common Theories, Models Frameworks (TMFs) useful to implementation science and research
- Identify implementation science techniques and the contexts in which they are appropriate.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is aimed at local and international audiences, including researchers, graduate students, program managers, community organizations, and policy/decision-makers working in the area of NCDs.
