Sarah Marshall CPA President-Elect

Prof. Sarah Marshall is the new President-Elect of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association (CPA). She started her tenure in spring of 2016 and will transition to CPA President in one year’s time, for a term of two years. Sarah has served on the Board of Directors since she was elected in 2014. The CPA represents over 14,000 physiotherapists, physiotherapist assistants and physiotherapist students across Canada.

Parkinson’s Disease Research Grant

For his project, “A novel exercise modality to improve motor learning in PD,” Dr. Marc Roig has been approved for a Pilot Project Grant from the Parkinson Canada’s Research Program. Through this initiative, Parkinson Canada invites grant applications from professionals committed to conducting novel, emerging, or innovative research in areas relevant to the cure, cause, prevention, improved treatment and/or understanding of Parkinson’s disease and its implications on society.

Faculty Tenure Promotions

Tenure has been awarded to three outstanding professors at SPOT: Drs. Isabelle Gagnon, Matthew Hunt and Melissa Park. All three were recognized for their excellence in research, teaching, and service. As well, Dr. Marie-Hélène Boudrias has been reappointed for three years. 

Aliki Thomas CRIR Leader

Aliki Thomas has been named the Leader of Theme 2 (Services, Systems, and Polices), under Axis 2 (Participation, Social Inclusion & Rehabilitation Services) at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Rehabilitation of Greater Montreal (CRIR). The aim of the research undertaken by CRIR is to address the needs of a varied clientele with significant and persistent physical disabilities. The impairments can be auditory, motor, speech and language or visual.

Laurence Roy COTF Grant

Laurence Roy was awarded the 2016 Canadian Occupational Therapy Foundation Research grant for her project entitled "Development of a Research and Practice Agenda on Homelessness and Occupational Therapy in Canada". The Canadian Occupational Therapy Foundation (COTF) supports research and scholarship in the field of Occupational Therapy. Stefanie Blain-Moraes / Aliki Thomas SSHRC Grants

Two faculty members were awarded McGill Internal Social Sciences and Humanities Development Grants. Prof. Stefanie Blain-Moraes was awarded for her project “Moving-with Autism: a participatory mixed method study of attunement across neurodiversity”, and Prof.

Dr. Richard Preuss named to the Faculty Honour list for Educational Excellence.

Dr. Richard Preuss has been named to the Faculty Honour list for Educational Excellence, for 2016-2017. The goal of the Faculty Honour List for Educational Excellence is to recognize outstanding contributions to education in the Faculty of Medicine, in the areas of teaching, educational leadership and innovation, faculty development, and research and scholarly activity.

Barbara Shankland has been awarded the Prix d’Excellence from the Ordre des ergothérapeutes du Québec

Barbara Shankland, Faculty Lecturer at SPOT has been awarded the Prix d’Excellence from the  Ordre des ergothérapeutes du Québec. This award recognizes outstanding personal qualities as well as involvement and actions directed towards the development, progression, promotion and updating occupational skills. The winner of this award makes a significant impact on the profession.

Susanne Mak has been awarded the Jonathan Campbell Meakins and Family Memorial Fellowship 2016

Susanne Mak, Assistant Professor [Professional] at SPOT: has been awarded the Jonathan Campbell Meakins and Family Memorial Fellowship 2016. This Fellowship has been created to “further and promote excellence in medical education by either an advanced postgraduate trainee or a faculty member in the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University.” 

Dr. Sara Ahmed has been awarded the Rosemary Wedderburn Brown Prize for 2016

Dr. Sara Ahmed, Assistant Professor at SPOT has been awarded the Rosemary Wedderburn Brown Prize for 2016. The Rosemary Wedderbrun Brown prize is aimed at full-time faculty members in the Schools of the Faculty of Medicine to recognize individuals with outstanding scholarly potential and demonstrated research excellence in the early stages of their career. Dr. Annette Majnemer will be leading a Canadian study on children with brain development problems

Dr. Annette Majnemer, Director of SPOT and Vice-Dean (Education - Faculty of Medicine) Will be leading a Canadian study on children with brain development problems.

She and her team have secured funding to the tune of $25 million from CIHR and other sources for the CHILD-BRIGHT network project! 

Dr. Stefanie Blain-Moraes awarded a Mitacs Accelerate grant

SPOT Faculty member Dr. Stefanie Blain-Moraes   has been awarded a Mitacs Accelerate grant, Tuning in to emotions of non-communicative persons in partnership with the Old Port of Montreal.

This will culminate in an exhibit in October at the Montreal Science Centre, “Mes émotions sont à fleur de peau”

Dr. Matthew Hunt awarded a new grant from R2HC

Dr. Matthew Hunt Assistant Professor at SPOT has been awarded a new grant from R2HC (Research for Health in Humanitarian Crises) as co-PI for: Aid when there’s “nothing left to offer”: A study of palliative and supportive care during international public health crises

Dr. Aliki Thomas received funding from REPAR for a second consecutive year

Dr. Aliki Thomas, Assistant Professor at SPOT has received funding from REPAR for a second consecutive year for her work with the Knowledge Translation Strategic Initiative in Rehabilitation in Québec.

She is leading this initiative with Dahlia Khairy (U de M). Co-investigators from SPOT include: Dr. Sara Ahmed, Dr. Dana Anaby, Dr. André Bussières and Dr. Keiko Shikako-Thomas
