Block Placements (BSW)

  • Block placements are not available for BSW U1 or U2 students. BSW U3 students can do a field placement in a Block after their academic course work is completed.
  • In a Block placement, a student is in a social service setting for an intensive block of time, either during the spring / summer term or during the academic term.
  • Academic Term Block Placements
    • BSW U3 students are in the field placement 4 days per week for a maximum of 32 hours per week for approximately 14 weeks to complete 400 hours.
  • Spring/Summer Block Placements
    • BSW U3 students start the 1st week of May, and work 4 days per week for a maximum of 32 hours per week for approximately 14 weeks to complete 400 hours.
  • There are several important options to consider before making the decision to do a Block placement. Field placement options in Montreal can be limited as many agencies do not offer a Block placement. Professors assume that field placements are taking place concurrently. Examples from the field are often used within the teaching process. Integration of learning takes place over time. While some students do well in the condensed and intensive time frame, others have found it more difficult to integrate.
  • For Spring/Summer block placements, the planning process begins in January.
  • Students have the option pf completing their field requirements at an approved social service agency outside of Quebec after their coursework is completed.
  • Block placements may be available in the regions of Quebec outside of Montreal proper, i.e. Lower North Shore, Laurentians, Gaspésie, Magdalen Islands, Eastern Townships, Lachute, and Kujuwak. Accommodation and support to cover transportation costs may be available as part as the Access to English Project.
