Field Placements

Students will be emailed an updated list of available placements when the field planning process begins. DO NOT CONTACT AGENCIES DIRECTLY TO INQUIRE ABOUT A PLACEMENT. STUDENTS DO NOT NEGOTIATE THEIR OWN FIELD PLACEMENTS. There is a process set up with the Field Education Office which each student must follow, prior to being matched with a field setting. Each agency profile includes a description and mandate of the agency, area of specialization, service area where students can be placed, language requirements and level of student the placement is available for.

Block Placements (BSW)

  • Students in the 2 year, 60 credit BSW may chose do a Block Placement in Y2. Students in Y1 do not have this option if they are planning to apply to the MSW program directly from Y1.
  • In a Block placement, a student is in a social service setting for an intensive block of time, either during the spring / summer term or during the academic term.
  • Students have the option of completing their field requirements at an approved social service agency outside of Quebec once coursework is completed.
  • Block placements may be available in the regions of Quebec. i.e. Lower North Shore, Laurentians, Gaspésie, Magdalen Islands, Eastern Townships, Lachute, Kujuwak. Accommodation and transportation costs may be available as part of the Access to English Project.
  • For Spring/Summer block placements, the planning process will begin in January.
  • There are several important options to consider before making the decision to do a Block placement. Field placement options in Montreal can be limited as many agencies do not offer a Block placement. Professors assume that field placements are taking place concurrently. Examples from the field are often used within the teaching process. Integration of learning takes place over time. While some students do well in the condensed and intensive time frame, others have found it more difficult to integrate.
