“I am a Nurse”: ISoN Professionalism Ceremony

As a mandatory ceremony for all incoming students in the BScN, BN(I) and MSc(A) (DE) program, the Professionalism Ceremony welcomes all new nursing students and provides them with an important sense of belonging to the Nursing Profession and the Ingram School of Nursing at McGill University.

The Ingram School of Nursing’s inaugural professionalism ceremony, held on October 2, 2015, was attended by 271 incoming undergraduate and graduate nursing students.

The ceremony was established to affirm the Ingram School of Nursing’s faculty and student commitment to the nursing profession and to the personal and collective roles that each plays in maintaining the highest standards in fulfilling their social contract with society.

Over the years, various speakers at the ceremony have included Dr. David Eidelman, Vice-Principal (Health Affairs) and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Dr. Franco Carnevale, Professor in the Ingram School of Nursing, who has given a moving speech titled “I am a nurse, Mr. Richard Ingram – , Mme. The Nursing Professionalism Ceremony is an important event marking the students’ entry into the Ingram School of Nursing and welcomes them into the nursing profession with pride. It is also an occasion for McGill Nursing faculty and clinical partners to show their support and recognition of each student’s commitment to the nursing profession

Once students receive their McGill student name tags , the delivery of the pledge to the nursing profession and professionalism is voiced out loud.

The oath is recited to affirm the Ingram School of Nursing’s faculty and student commitment to the nursing profession and to the personal and collective roles that each play in maintaining the highest standards in fulfilling their social contract with society. Reciting the Nursing Oath together, faculty, students and clinical partners ensure that the students are cognizant of their responsibilities as students in a Professional Health Program.

Once the ceremony occurs , students, faculty, and clinical partners gather together to celebrate not only the successful inaugural event , but the wonderful Profession of Nursing that they are all proud members of.
