Placement Tests for ESL WCOM Courses (WCOM 235, WCOM 245, and WCOM 255)

Improve Your Academic English

If English is your second or additional language and you would like to strengthen your academic writing and communication skills, the McGill Writing Centre’s ESL WCOM courses are designed for you. These courses address the diverse needs and challenges of students whose first language is not English.

Taking the placement test does not guarantee a place in a course. Registration for courses is on a first-come, first-served basis.

About the Self-Placement Test

To register for one of the ESL WCOM courses, you must first complete a self-assessment checklist. This checklist is designed to help you identify the course that best aligns with your current English proficiency and academic goals.

Based on your responses, you will be recommended one of the following courses:

  • WCOM 235 – Academic English 2
For students who are still developing foundational academic writing and reading skills.
  • WCOM 245 – Essay and Critical Thinking
For students who are ready to write well-structured essays and build critical thinking skills.
  • WCOM 255 – Research Essay and Rhetoric
For students who are prepared to write research-based academic essays and engage with scholarly texts.

Process and Registration Permits

Once you complete the self-assessment form:

  1. We may follow up with you for additional information, if needed.
  2. A registration permit will be created for the recommended course. Please expect a delay of 1-2 business days.
  3. You will receive an email confirmation once your permit is in place.
  4. You can then register for the course through Minerva.

Please note:

  • The placement test is only required for undergraduate ESL WCOM courses (WCOM 235, 245, and 255).
  • There is no placement test for WCOM 250 or WCOM 295.
  • Graduate students should refer to the section below.

Advising

If you have questions about your placement or course selection, you may speak with an advisor. Advising sessions are optional and available by appointment.

Graduate Students

  • Graduate students may take an undergraduate ESL WCOM course only under certain conditions, and must complete the self-placement test. A registration permit will be issued upon approval.
  • For courses at the 245 level or below, written permission is also required from your department or supervisor before registration.
