Have you been interested in joining a book club but have been put-off by lengthy reading lists and weekly time commitments? Looking for a new read to pick-up to kick-off the summer? This Secular Reading Circle might just be for you!

In this online Secular Reading Circle taking place on Wednesdays in May from 7-8 PM (EDT) via Zoom, we will delve into Joan Didion’s acclaimed memoir, The Year of Magical Thinking. Following on the heels of the death of her husband and alongside her daughter’s critical illness, this self-reflexive narrative follows Joan’s process of grieving. The memoir grapples with notions of memory and faith as linked with grief, particularly Joan’s own self-actualization of her independence. The book in its entirety can be found and open-accessed through McGill’s library here.

These sessions will be facilitated by Ashley Thorup, MORSL's Communications Associate. Ashley holds a B.A. Hons. and M.A. in English Literature from McGill University, and is currently pursuing a M.A. in Teaching and Learning in English Language Arts. She has presented papers at several international conferences and was also the recipient of a SSHRCC grant in 2019-2020 for her thesis on African-Canadian contemporary poetry.

This reading circle is open to all McGill students. While it is highly recommended that you attend all four sessions for continuity, you may attend still attend just one or several sessions.
