Avionics and Flight Control

Significant advances in avionic systems and integrated sensing has drastically increased the safety and operational capabilities of modern aircraft, from small-scale multi-rotors vehicles to large-scale transatlantic passenger aircraft. Our research focuses on improving such systems, including integrated systems, as well as research into electric drivetrains. A growing MIAE research focus is in identifying safety and resilience challenges in avionic systems, and developing novel means to protect such systems, including model-based software and systems engineering techniques for smart and safe cyber-physical avionics systems. Another major research theme is the development of robust flight controllers for unpiloted aerial vehicles in a variety of environments, from monitoring wildfires to flight in unsteady wind conditions, incorporating machine learning approaches to improve guidance navigation, and control.
