Dr. Aggarwal is a minimally invasive surgeon and considered one of the leading authorities on surgical simulation, education, and skills assessment.  His research explores the relationship between these and patient safety.  He has published over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts in such journals as NEJM, BMJ, and Annals of Surgery.  Originally trained in London, England, where he was elected to the prestigious National Institute of Health Research Clinician Scientist Fellowship, he joined McGill in 2014.

Dr. Tamblyn is a James McGill Chair at McGill University.  Her past research has focused on the necessary relationships between medical education, licensure and practice, and has greatly influenced resulting credentialing policies on a national scale.  Her work on computerised drug safety interventions has been recognised internationally, and she leads a CIHR-funded team to integrate e-health and modern technologies into the improved management of chronic disease.  Her work has been widely published in JAMA, BMJ, and Annals of Internal Medicine, among others.

Dan Boorman is a production test pilot and safety advisor at Boeing, having worked on the development of a number of aircraft including the 777 and 787 Dreamliner.  His expertise has also allowed him to cross over from aviation to patient safety.  His experience in checklist development contributed to the development of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist in partnership with Dr. Atul Gawande, which has since been globally implemented as a tool to improve patient safety.

Dr. Dimick is a minimally invasive surgeon internationally recognised for his surgical research focused on outcomes and quality measurement, policy evaluation, and large-scale quality improvement interventions.  He is funded by national bodies such as the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) and has published extensively in some of the highest-impact medical journals including NEJM and JAMA.  He is also the current president of the Association for Academic Surgery and serves on the Executive Committee of the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative.

Dr. Dixon-Woods is a leading researcher in the fields of patient safety and healthcare improvement at the University of Leicester, where she leads the Social Science Applied to Healthcare Improvement Research (SAPPHIRE) group.  She has advised on multiple national reports into patient safety including the 2012 Berwick Report in the UK, and currently serves as an expert panel member for the US National Patient Safety Foundation review.  She holds honorary professorships at both Johns Hopkins University and Imperial College London.

Professor Sir Liam Donaldson is an internationally recognised champion for patient safety and public health.  Originally trained as a surgeon, he served as the UK’s Chief Medical Officer from 1998 – 2010, advising government and authoring policy reports across the full spectrum of public health issues.  On a global level, he is a past vice-chairman of the World Health Organisation Executive Board and is the current WHO Envoy for Patient Safety.  He also serves as the Chair of Health Policy at Imperial College London and Chancellor of Newcastle University.

Dr. Draycott is an obstetrician with a research interest in patient safety and interdisciplinary training.  His research group has led the development of automated maternity dashboards to measure patient satisfaction after delivery and the Practical Obstetric Multiprofessional Training (PROMPT) course to improve teamworking and perinatal outcomes.  As a prestigious Health Foundation Improvement Science Fellow he is seeking to investigate contextual elements of training to inform future implementation programs in the NHS.

Dr. Sevdalis is an experimental psychologist with an internationally recognised record of research in patient safety and surgery.  Formerly a Reader at Imperial College London, his expertise is in the area of assessment and training in healthcare, with a particular emphasis on non-technical skills.  He has developed numerous evaluation tools to this end including the Observational Teamwork Assessment for Surgery (OTAS) and the revised NOTECHS for operating room teams, and has co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications to date.

Dennis L. Fowler is the Vice President and Medical Director for Perioperative Services at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. He is a pioneer in the field of endoscopic surgery and has been the first to perform numerous innovative laparoscopic surgical procedures, never before accomplished. Dr. Fowler was also the first general surgeon to use the Harmonic Scalpel, a device that uses wave frequency (instead of electric current) to divide the tissue and vibration to coagulate blood vessels (Outpatient Surgery Magazine). Dr. Fowler received his M.D. in 1973 from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Kansas City.

Dr. Kiyoyuki Miyasaka is an anesthesiologist from Tokyo, Japan. He spent his undergraduate years in the United States, receiving a BSc in Engineering from Swarthmore College. He subsequently worked as an engineer for Masimo Corporation, testing and developing pulse oximeter sensors. He returned to Japan to pursue a medical degree at Shinshu University. Dr. Miyasaka completed his junior residency at Aizawa Hospital, and his senior residency in anesthesia at the prestigious St. Luke's International Hospital in Tokyo. Dr. Miyasaka has completed two fellowships - the first in medical device innovation at the University of Minnesota (2010-2011), and the second in surgical simulation education at the University of Pennsylvania (2013-2015), along with a Master of Science in Translational Research. He is currently a staff physician at St. Luke’s International University, with a dual appointment at St. Luke’s International University Simulation Center opened in April 2016.

Marlies Schijven researches the field of mHealth, Simulation and Serious Gaming. On the 28th of October 2013 she became the first surgeon to livestream an operation to YouTube using GoogleGlass. Dr. Schijven is known for her publications on the area of surgery, mhealth, medical education and simulation technology. She is an expert in the area of medical simulation validation studies and processes.

Dr. Li Fellander-Tsai, MD, PhD, is the Professor of Orthopaedics at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. She is the chairman of the Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology and Director of the Center for Advanced Medical Simulation and Training (CAMST). She is active in orthopaedic research, education and training as well as advanced surgical technology. Professor Michael Montanaro is the Professor and Chair of the Department of Contemporary Dance at Concordia University, the Co-director Topological Media Lab, and a member of Hexagram Institute for Research/Creation in Media Arts. Dr. Wayne Choi is a 4th year Emergency Medicine Resident undertaking a fellowship in Innovation with Dr. Rajesh Aggarwal at McGill University. He initially studied Computer Engineering, and had worked for Microsoft and co-founded the mobile tech company CellMap Inc. Afterwards, he began to pursue emergency medicine. Wayne is currently the co-director of ResusHour, the resident-led simulation program at McGill's Emergency Medicine program. Wayne is excited about using innovative technology to improve the medical system and medical education.

Dr. Das’ work focuses on the quality of health care, mental health, information in health and education markets, child learning and test-scores and the determinants of trust. He is currently working on long-term projects on health and education markets in India and Pakistan.

In 2012, Dr. Agrawal's received the Harvard School of Public Health Alumni Award for Public Health Professionals.

Bio

Dr. Mohanan’s work with COHESIVE-India (Collaboration for Health System Improvement and Impact Evaluation in India) focuses on behavioral research and impact evaluation studies in India’s health sector, providing data useful for policy making. His research areas include causal effects of health shocks, quality of care in developing countries, impact of supply side incentives, and program evaluation in the health sector.

Dr. Mate oversees the development of innovative system designs to implement high-quality health care both in the United States and in resource-limited settings abroad. Dr. Fitzgerald’s work with the Lifebox Foundation, a global foundation founded by Dr. Atul Gawande, focuses on saving lives through safe surgery in low income countries. He was the previous President of the Association of Surgeons in Training. Dr. Fitzgerald’s interests lie in global surgery and public health, gastrointestinal disease, medical devices, patient safety, and medical education. He has over 100+ peer-reviewed publications and book chapters.
