The specimen has been mounted to show the base of the heart, with the normal aortic valve (long arrow (top image)) in the center and a stenotic (approximately 1.5 x 0.5 cm orifice) pulmonary valve (short arrow) below. The red glass rod indicates a patent foramen ovale. The right ventricular free wall (R on posterior view (bottom image)) is about the same thickness as that of the left ventricle (L), indicating significant right sided hypertrophy.

Comment

No clinical information is associated with the specimen. The descriptive card attributes the stenosis to inflammation; however, the appearance is that of a congenital valvular abnormality.
