Final exams implementation

 

In order to respect the TLS guidelines in a way to avoid disadvantaging students, the Faculty of Science implementation is as follows:

  1. All final exams must be implemented in take-home form, with 72 hours allowed for completion. The exam should begin at the original start time (as listed in the Exam Timetable). The choice of 72 hours is governed by concerns over (a) accessibility, (b) time zone considerations, and (c) the need for uniformity of regulations for students taking Science exams.
    Notes:
    • for a final exam in ‘take home’ form (in the terminology of the TLS Guidelines), the exam
      • must begin at the time scheduled in the Examination Schedule, and must allow submission for the entire 72 hour period after that
      • should be equivalent (although not necessarily identical in form) to the originally planned ‘3 hour’ exam in terms of what the student is expected to complete; it should not be an exam designed to fill 72 hours, for example.
    • an instructor who intends to change to different (eg longer) type of evaluation should recast the ‘final exam’ as a ‘final assessment’, and allow for a longer completion period.
    • conflicts: students will not have a claim of exam conflict if several 72 hour windows overlap. Conflicts were dealt with in the original exam schedule design, and in light of the bullet above, the 72 hour windows should not introduce additional conflicts.
  2. Any final replaced by an alternative assessment (eg a non-timed assignment) must have the submission date no later than May 1st.
  3. All assessments (final exam or non-timed assignments) will be carried out via myCourses: possible modes of delivery include
    • Online assessment using the myCourses Quiz tools available;
    • Construction of assessment via Crowdmark, distributed via myCourses;
    • Distribution of assessment via pdf download by student, with student uploading completed script;
    • Online assessment via equivalent software (eg WebWork).

Support will be provided for instructors who need to implement these assessment methods but are not familiar with them.
