Abstract: I will describe a search for co-oriented taut foliations using branched surfaces as the primary tool. This search is inspired by results from Heegaard Floer homology. As an example, I will prove that nontrivial connected sums of fibered knots are persistently foliar. This work is joint with Charles Delman.
