We are thrilled to announce the appointments of three colleagues to named chairs in the Faculty of Law. Fabien Gélinas has been named Sir William C. Macdonald Professor of Law, for a seven-year term commencing May 1, 2016.

After many years of extraordinary service and scholarly commitment to McGill University, our colleagues Paul S. Dempsey and Margaret A. Somerville will be retiring respectively on June 1, 2016, and August 31, 2016.

Nicolas Mateesco Matte (1913-2016)
It is with regret that the Faculty of Law and the Institute of Air and Space Law must announce the passing of Dr. Nicolas Mateesco Matte, OC, QC, FRSC, CR, SRC, on April 13, 2016, at the age of 102. Throughout his distinguished academic career, Nicolas Mateesco Matte contributed to the development and better knowledge of international air and space law.

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Professor Ram Jakhu has been appointed Director of the Research Center and the Institute of Air and Space Law (IASL), for a one-year term that will begin on June 1, 2016, when the outgoing director, Professor Paul S. Dempsey, will be stepping down.

Daniel Jutras named to the Senate Appointments Advisory Board
Dean Daniel Jutras has been named a federal member of the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments by the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister of Democratic Institutions.
Dean of the Faculty of Law since 2009 and a graduate of Harvard Law School, and of Université de Montréal, Professor Jutras currently holds the Wainwright Chair in Civil Law at McGill University.
Essay Contest: Nappert Prize in International Arbitration
Thanks to the generosity of Sophie Nappert (BCL’86, LLB’86), the Nappert Prize in International Arbitration will be awarded for the second time in 2016 after an enormously sucessful inaugurual competition in 2014.

Jennifer Stoddart made Officer of the Order of Canada
The Faculty of Law is delighted to report that Ms. Jennifer Stoddart, BCL’80, was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada in December 2015, “for her international leadership in privacy rights and for her exemplary public service as the privacy commissioner of Canada.”

To encourage innovation and stimulate interest in research among law students at faculties of Quebec civil law, the Paul-André Crépeau Center for Private and Comparative Law is launching a student poster contest.The contest is linked to the conference that will mark, on 12 February 2016, the Crépeau Centre’s 40th anniversary, during which poster submissions will be displayed and the winners announced.
