Recent advances in artificial intelligence are transforming how humanities scholars study culture, language, and storytelling. Large language models, multimodal systems, and computational methods now make it possible to analyze narrative patterns across thousands of books, images, historical documents, and cultural contexts. The AI-focused Digital Humanities program brings together humanistic interpretation, cultural analytics, and artificial intelligence to study cultural expression across languages, media, and historical periods. The program trains students to use large language models, multimodal systems, and computational methods to analyze diverse forms of cultural expression. At the same time, it treats AI systems as objects of critical inquiry, examining how they represent cultural difference, reproduce bias, and make interpretive judgments about complex humanistic materials.
The program is organized around collaborative, project-based research connected to McGill’s strengths in literary studies, cultural analytics, computer science, and multilingual scholarship. Students work with large collections of books, images, historical documents, and contemporary media; design and evaluate AI-assisted research workflows; and develop methods for comparing narrative meaning across cultural and linguistic contexts. Particular emphasis is placed on multicultural sensitivity, interpretive variation, and the creation of AI systems that better account for differences in how stories, values, and social worlds are understood.
