About

Over the years, McGill University has earned an international reputation as a preeminent institution of higher education. It has often been awarded the distinction of the best university in Canada; we have been ranked among the top universities in the humanities worldwide, placing us ahead of other institutions like University of Pennsylvania, Duke and UCLA in the United States, the École Normale Supérieure and the Sorbonne in France, University of Tokyo, Amsterdam University and the Free University in Berlin. McGill boasts the highest percentage of international students of any Canadian university, and our incoming undergraduates have the highest grade point average of any group in Canada.

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures seeks to build on this excellence and take full advantage of McGill’s unique situation. Conceiving of LLC as part of a broader body of research in the Humanities, we work closely with other faculty in programs such as Liberal Arts Program, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and the Institute for European Studies. We also encourage students to draw on the extraordinary wide-ranging courses offered by McGill’s exceptional faculty beyond the department. LLC students at McGill enjoy the interaction with a diverse and gifted group of colleagues.

LLC also connects its students to the academic world by hosting regular conferences and events, inviting visiting scholars, artists and writers from all over the world. In addition, we encourage our students to gain worldly experience and perfect their language abilities by studying abroad. McGill has regular exchange programs, and the Office of Study Abroad can also help students wishing to attend other universities.
