Program Guidelines and Policies

In addition to the regulations of the Faculty of Arts, students in the Bachelor of Arts, Faculty Program in Population and Global Health (BA-PGH) must adhere to the following program-specific guidelines and policies.

Experiential Learning Requirements (GPHL 303 & GPHL 401)

GPHL 303 (Community-Engaged Learning) and GPHL 401 (Experiential Learning) are required core components of the BA-PGH program. Due to the structured and placement-based nature of these courses:

  • Students must successfully complete both courses to progress in the program. These courses must be completed according to the program’s sequencing requirements

Failure or Non-Completion

Students who do not successfully complete GPHL 303 or GPHL 401 will be subject to additional program review: Guideline in Development

Study Abroad Training, Study Away, and Inter-University Transfer (IUT) Eligibility

Due to the structured and cohort-based design of the BA-PGH program:

  • Students are not eligible for traditional exchange or independent study away programs

  • Students may be eligible to take courses at another institution through an Inter-University Transfer (IUT) outside of the Fall-Winter academic year, given the structured design of the program and required courses. More information on Inter-University Transfer Courses can be found here

Study Abroad and Pre-Departure Training Requirements

While BA-PGH students are not eligible for traditional exchange programs, students participating in experiential learning (GPHL 303 and GPHL 401) or other global health activities (e.g., Global Health Scholars) must comply with McGill’s Study Abroad safety requirements, including pre-departure training

BA-PGH students will follow the Study Abroad Pre-Departure Training requirements

For BA-PGH students, specifically, pre-departure training will be coordinated through McGill Global Health Programs (GHP) which has separate program-specific guidance and timelines from the standard Study Abroad processes. All questions related to pre-departure training and requirements should be directed to studentaffairsghp.med [at] mcgill.ca

Credits Outside the Faculties of Arts and Science

Given the interdisciplinary nature of the BA-PGH program, students are permitted additional flexibility in taking courses outside the Faculties of Arts and Science.

  • Students may complete up to a maximum of 30 credits outside the Faculties of Arts and Science

  • This includes complementary and elective courses combined

  • This exception reflects the program’s integration of courses offered by multiple faculties

Additional Notes

Students are strongly encouraged to:

  • Plan their academic pathway carefully due to program sequencing requirements

  • Consult with the Student Affairs Officer before making decisions that may impact progression

  • Review both Faculty of Arts and BA-PGH program policies regularly
